Shareefah helps deliver baby outside hospital entrance

Shareefah La’Force, named Whittington Health’s best customer services provider at a recent award ceremony, justified her accolade this week when assisting an expectant mother to give birth outside the hospital’s main reception in a taxi!

The mother, Mbu Mbasia of Edmonton, arrived at the hospital by taxi on Wednesday 4 January but unfortunately did not even make it to the wheelchair on hand to bring her to maternity.

It soon became apparent that the reception staff were going to have to act quickly, and midwives were called to the hospital’s main entrance.

Meanwhile, Shareefah, the Whittington’s receptionist, climbed in the back of the cab and covered the mother with a coat, calming her down with the help of a colleague.

No sooner had the midwives arrived to take control of the situation, the baby boy, later named Ethan, already had his head and shoulders out, amidst tears from both mother and the receptionist.

Shareefah recalled: ‘I was crying, she was crying, everyone was crying. Then the midwives arrived and took her to maternity. I’m still in total shock!’

Whittington Health is delighted to confirm that both mother and baby are healthy and well.
