Whittington consultant appointed section president at Royal College of Medicine

A consultant from Whittington Health was appointed section president of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Society of Medicine on Friday 19 October.

Clive Spence Jones, consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician at the north London hospital, began his one-year tenure with a presidential address entitled "inspiration from the natural world". The president’s role is to organise a monthly meeting during the academic terms. Dr Spence-Jones will invite four speakers for each meeting and help to raise sponsorship for use of the Royal Society of Medicine’s facilities.

Talking of his new appointment, Mr Spence-Jones said: “I am delighted to have been appointed section president of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal College of Medicine. I will aim to build on the success of my predecessor, Peter Mason, and will do my best to increase the number of trainees who attend our meetings and do all I can to ensure they enjoy the academic content.

“I have thought a lot about the role and have done my best to choose meeting subjects that are practical clinical topics, applicable to clinicians whether they sub specialise or not. The topics I intend to cover include the modern management of bleeding, a meeting on genetics including epigenetics, a meeting on how our training in the UK matches up on the global stage, and a meeting addressing whether risk is reduced by the explosion of outside monitoring of processes rather than outcomes.”

Mr Spence-Jones will carry out this new role alongside his full time position at the Whittington.
