Competition wins money for Whittington Building for Babies

Competition wins money for Whittington Building for BabiesA citizenship course at Parliament Hill Girls School in Camden has won the Whittington hospital's appeal £3,000. Youth and Philanthropy Initiative, or YPI, is a successful project in schools in Canada and was piloted this year at Parliament Hill. The initiative provides students with an academic opportunity to learn about philanthropy and to instil philanthropic values, whilst being an authentic opportunity to assist directly a charity.

Tina Jevtic, Farzane Begum and Sumay Yan, who will be sitting for their GCSE's next year, took the opportunity to research and construct a presentation about Building for Babies. Meeting with appeals manager Carrie Reiners, the girls were educated about the charity and taken around NICU where they met with staff nurse Clare Kissock.

Their coherent and innovative project explained to a panel of external judges that if they won they would award the £3,000, which was funded by cosmetics company Mac, to Building for Babies. A particular interest was shown in the Neo-Puff, an infant resuscitator that directly saves lives, and the amount would see the four resuscitators needed for the unit all bought. The girls presented the winning cheque to the fundraising team on Tuesday 10 July and they have asked that the £3,000 be put aside and used specifically for the Neo-Puffs.
