Florence Nightingale scholarship for emergency department nurse

Donna Barleycorn, lead nurse for urgent care and acting professional development nurse in the emergency department at The Whittington Hospital has been granted a national travel scholarship by the Florence Nightingale Foundation. This prestigious national award is much sought after and Donna has succeeded in securing it against strong competition. The Florence Nightingale Foundation awards 20-30 scholarships a year and there is always a large number of applicants.

The award will enable Donna to undertake a seven week study of trauma nursing care and organisation at two world-class trauma centres in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa in Spring 2011. She hopes that one outcome of her study will be some comparative learning to improve trauma nurse training in London and the UK.

Bronagh Scott, director of nursing at The Whittington said, “We are delighted that this important national scholarship has been awarded to a nurse at The Whittington and Donna is a worthy recipient. She has been working hard as lead nurse for urgent care but also as acting professional development nurse for the emergency department. She is committed to her work and we will be fully supporting Donna in her study.”

Donna said, “I am thrilled and delighted that the Florence Nightingale Foundation have shown their confidence in me in making this award and I will endeavour to repay their confidence in me, by producing through my study, a useful and progressive contribution to the advancement of the nursing profession. I also want to thank in particular Bronagh and other senior staff in the nursing directorate for the support and encouragement they have given me and will do so in the future.”
