Dignity in Action Day

Content
As part of the dignity in action day, Whittington Health held a privacy and dignity day on Wednesday 1 February. The day was organised by members of the privacy and dignity group, a number of which are registered ‘Dignity Champions’.

There was also a stall from ‘Age UK, Islington, Alzheimer society, the trust learning disability lead and general stall with resources for staff. Patients and carers were invited to take part in the event.

The aim of the day was to raise staff understanding of privacy and dignity and how we can apply it to practice. Tina Jegede, matron for care of the older patients says that the trust philosophy here at Whittington Health is to treat each patient as a person and with upmost respect and dignity and staff should not consider privacy & dignity as an ‘add on’ to their jobs but as part of the care they deliver to people who use our services.

Some of the factors to consider around privacy and dignity include:
• Being self aware of how we communicate. Does our verbal and non verbal communication relate respect of the person?
• Ensuring that patients needs are central to every care we provide.
• Treating each patient as individual and recognising that people preferences are different‘ See and hear the person’
• Providing a dignified environment. Keeping noise to the minimum, making sure that we uphold patient privacy at all times.

Patient and relatives can let us know how we are doing by completing the patient satisfaction survey at the end of their stay or when they have used the hospital services.
