John Farrell delighted with electronic prescribing

Content John Farrell, retired director of pharmacy, visited the Whittington to witness the electronic prescribing system which is being rolled out across the hospital.

The new computer enables doctors to prescribe medicines electronically, while nursing staff can electronically record that a patient has taken their medication.

This software replaces the paper drug charts and aims to improve the quality and clarity of prescriptions, improve communication with GPs and speed up the discharge process.

Additionally, the prescribing software checks for medicines that should not be given together and will also check against any allergies that the patient may have.

Nurses will also be reminded when it is time to administer medication and they will use a laptop on wheels to take to the patient’s bed and record when the patient has taken their dose.

John Farrell, who was the instigator of this project, congratulated all the staff involved. He said he was delighted to see the software in action and believed that the Whittington was a pioneer for this type of technology.
