Jason Harries, Martin Kuper and Bronagh ScottWhittington Health has won the CHKS Top Hospitals programme patient safety award 2013. The CHKS Top Hospitals awards celebrate the success of healthcare providers across the UK and are given to acute organisations for their achievements in healthcare quality and improvement.

The patient safety award recognises outstanding performance in providing a safe hospital environment for patients and is based on a range of indicators, including rates of hospital-acquired infections and mortality.

Over the past two years, The Whittington has been highlighted as one of the safest hospitals in England, with the best score in the country on the summary hospital-level mortality indicator (SHMI). This indicator is based on deaths within 30 days following hospital treatment, covering a number of conditions.

Dr Martin Kuper, medical director at Whittington Health said: “We are very proud to have won the CHKS Top Hospitals programme patient safety award, and to have had the lowest standard mortality in the country for the past two years. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff. We will strive to continue this excellent work going forward.”

Jason Harries, managing director, CHKS said: “Every hospital is accountable to its patients, their families and carers as well as the local community to provide a safe environment. Our patient safety award highlights those trusts that clearly share a commitment to driving improvement and engendering a culture of excellence throughout their organisation and it is a credit to the staff at Whittington Health that it has won this award.”

The CHKS Top Hospitals programme awards took place at the Middle Temple Hall London on Tuesday 30 April 2013 attended by over 200 guests including leaders from across the healthcare sector, from the Department of Health, Royal Colleges, and acute trusts.
