Breastfeeding support

Many mums find some support with breastfeeding helpful. This can be at any time, from pregnancy and getting started, to your child’s final breastfeeds. You can get breastfeeding support in the following ways, depending on what suits you.

Talk to your midwife or health visitor

All of our midwives and health visitors across the community and in our hospital are trained to share information and support you with feeding your baby. You can ask them questions at any point during your pregnancy and following birth.

They may recommend that you attend one of our breastfeeding workshops, a drop-in session or put you in touch with another mum who is experienced in breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding workshops lasts two and a half hours and takes place every month at The Whittington Hospital.  The workshops are run by infant feeding specialists.
To book a workshop, please speak to your midwife or enquire in the antenatal clinic. Partners are welcome to attend all sessions.

For more information please contact Sally Crowther or Pippa Faulkes, infant feeding specialists, on 07956 257987 or 07831 436674.

Peer support service

One of our breastfeeding peer supporters may visit you at the hospital after your baby is born. Breastfeeding peer supporters are mums who have breastfed and have been trained to help other mums. They are all trained by the breastfeeding network and come from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.

Islington breastfeeding peer supporters
Mums who live in Islington may also be phoned by a breastfeeding peer supporter around three to four days after their baby is born to see how things are going. If you would rather not receive a call please let us know on 020 3316 8439.

Drop-in sessions

Breastfeeding drop-in sessions take place at centres across Haringey and Islington for women who live in these boroughs and are free to attend. Drop-in sessions are an opportunity to meet other mums and get information and support with breastfeeding.

You don’t need to book ahead for breastfeeding drop-in sessions (except at Stonecroft Children’s Centre) – just turn up to a session that suits you. Please contact the centre beforehand to check if they are open on bank holidays and during school holidays.

The sessions are run by infant feeding coordinators, lactation consultants and breastfeeding peer supporters (mums who have breastfed and have been trained to help other mums).
