Why Choose Us?

Our Services - Maternity Services - Why choose us - Top image
Many thanks for your interest in our maternity service. Here are some of the reasons to choose us to care for you and your family.

We are one of the safest trusts in England
We have a reputation for delivering excellent care and our hospital is renowned as one of the safest in England. We received a 'Good' overall rating from CQC in our inspection and were awarded 'Outstanding' for caring - of the 27 Trusts in London only eight were given this coveted rating.

Excellent feedback from women who have babies with us

In June 2017, over 95% of women who responded to our Friends and Family test said they would recommend our antenatal care and 92% would recommend a birth at the Whittington Hospital. Our community maternity services also received a number of compliments from satisfied clients.

We have good facilities

Our birth centre has four birthing pools and the labour ward has two pools and telemetry to encourage normality. The unit is undergoing exciting upgrades to ensure a smart environment in which women can feel relaxed.

Skilled obstetric care and fetal medicine

Should you need them, we have 14 obstetricians who are highly skilled in intermediate and high-risk pregnancies and who are present on the labour ward seven days a week. We have three specialist fetal medicine doctors. We work closely with UCLH - they look after our babies who are less than 27 weeks gestation or have complex medical problems and we look after some of their maternity patients of later gestations.

On site neonatal unit

Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is highly regarded and looks after sick and premature babies born from 27 weeks onwards. One in nine babies born in the UK spends at least a few days in a neonatal unit.

We work in partnership with you

We run active birth and parentcraft classes, and we provide acupuncture and reflexology.

The maternity unit is at the forefront of innovation. This includes partners staying overnight, enhanced recovery and midwifery-led induction of labour and normalising birth.

We tailor your care to your choices and needs

Maternity care at Whittington Health is tailored to your individual choices and needs. Depending on the pregnancy, you can choose to have your baby at home with the full support of our midwives, in our acclaimed, relaxing birth centre, or with additional support from our doctors and midwives on our labour ward at the Whittington hospital in Archway.

We look after a diverse population where women and their families are treated as individuals. We have a comprehensive interpreting service available for most languages.

Fully coordinated care

We are one of seven pilot sites in this area of London offering maternity care coordinated between your home, our many community locations and our hospital. Our team will care for you from your first antenatal appointment through to our health visitors, seeing you and your baby at home after birth. This coordinated approach means that you will only have one care record with our Trust, which will enable you to enjoy a smoother journey of care during your pregnancy and beyond.

As an integrated organisation, midwives, community midwives and health visitors work closely together. Community midwives are equipped with iPads to support remote working in various community venues.

Our midwives work in shifts to cover all hours, in all areas of midwifery, including daytime, nights and weekends, as well as being on call to support women birthing at home. Our staff are well supported through strong practice development and a Professional Midwifery Advocate team.
