If you have an emergency or concern during or after pregnancy, you can attend Maternity Triage for an urgent assessment.

You can refer yourself by calling the triage direct line 0207 288 5880, or attend directly by coming to Betty Mansell Ward on level 3. You may also be referred by your doctor or midwife.

If you have concerns about your baby after birth, please call 999 or go to the emergency department (A&E).

When should you call maternity triage?

  • Feeling unwell, or a persistent fever
  • Headaches, flashing lights or sudden swelling
  • Pain, redness, lumps or swelling in your legs
  • If you are concerned about your baby’s movements
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • If you think you are in labour
  • If you think your waters have broken

If you have any other concerns which you are unsure about – please call us and we are happy to help and offer advice.

Triage is open 24/7 and during working hours (weekdays 9am to 5pm). It is staffed by an experienced midwife and a specialist doctor.

Waiting times will vary depending on how busy we are, but we aim to have an initial assessment within 15 minutes of your arrival. A midwife will assess you and ask the reason for your visit. You will then be asked to wait for further assessment and treatment.

This system ensures that you will be seen based on urgency or need and you may wait longer than others.

Please contact your community midwife for blood test and urine test results or antenatal clinic appointments.
