Soap star launches clean hands campaign

Soap star launches clean hands campaignFormer Eastenders ‘soap’ star, Michelle Collins pictured here with infection control consultant Dr Michael Kelsey and Deborah Wheeler director of nursing and clinical development, visited the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust on Monday 17 January to launch the cleanyourhands programme at the hospital.

The campaign has been introduced to improve the standards of hand hygiene in hospitals and to keep down the rate of hospital-acquired infections and the Whittington Hospital has been chosen as an early implementer of the NHS National Patient Safety Agency’s cleanyourhands campaign, the first national campaign of its kind to be run anywhere in the world.

It is understood by all staff at the Whittington that

  • Clean hands save lives

    and that

  • By running this campaign, it is possible to treble the rate of hand washing within the hospital.

To make sure all staff can easily clean their hands at any time, alcohol-based disinfectant hand rub will be by every patient’s bed.

Deborah Wheeler, Director of Nursing and Clinical Development at the Whittington said “Under the scheme, patients will be able to ask any member of staff to wash their hands before treating them. Whittington staff will be happy to be asked to do this as it is important that patients feel they are involved in their own care. All staff here are very keen to ensure this scheme works”.
