Transfusion Awareness Week: 23 - 27 April 2007
Monday 23 April is the start of National Transfusion Awareness Week. The campaign has been organised by the Chief Medical Officer's National Transfusion Committee and aims to familiarise the public with the details and importance of blood transfusions.Three million units of blood were issued last year in the UK and are used to treat patients suffering with severe anaemia, thrombocytopenia, haemophilia or thalassaemia which requires frequent transfusions.
The campaign will inform patients and members of the public about safety issues, including any potential risks but primarily the benefits of a transfusion. All week there will be information and slide shows on this at the main entrance of the Whittington Hospital from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. On Tuesdays and Wednesday from 2:30 pm to 5 pm in the ante natal clinic and Wednesdays and Fridays at the same time in the Ifor ward.
