Whittington champion changes the world for deaf and hard of hearing people
RNID, the national charity representing the UK's nine million deaf and hard of hearing people, has been searching the country for local champions who are changing the world for deaf and hard of hearing people. The first ever RNID Community Awards aim to acknowledge the efforts of individuals who have in some way made a positive difference to the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people, no matter how big or small.Mary Hannon of Chingford has nominated local champion Irene Carr from Kentish Town. Mary says: "Irene deserves RNID's Community Award because she goes out of her way to make time for her patients. She always has a welcome and a smile when I attend Whittington Hospital Magdala Avenue Hearing Service - and when I can't get to the clinic, she sends my batteries in the post and tells me by phone how to fix my equipment. She retired on 27 April and I don't know how her patients will manage without her pleasant presence."
Irene Carr says: "I'm really pleased to have been nominated - it's a real boost to know that what I do is making a difference! Thank you to Mary Hannon for the nomination and well done to everyone who is also working to change the world for deaf and hard of hearing people. Hopefully the RNID Community Awards will encourage more people to become local champions."
Dr John Low, Chief Executive of RNID, says: "Irene Carr has done much to improve the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people in London.
"RNID has been working to overcome the barriers and stigma faced by deaf and hard of hearing people for more than 95 years. However, we cannot do this without the continued support of local people, who raise awareness of hearing loss in their communities, encourage best practice or dedicate their lives to helping deaf and hard of hearing people in some way just like Irene Carr. If her story inspires you, you too can help change the world for the deaf and hard of hearing people you meet."
