Special Commendation for COPD

Special Commendation for COPDThe BTS Silver Jubilee Awards aim to celebrate teamwork and commitment to quality from its members in the British Thoracic Society. Beside many applicants of a high standard, the Whittington’s COPD service, led by Myra Stern and Louise Restrick, consultant chest physicians, and Helen Broomfield, head of chronic respiratory service, was awarded a special commendation by the Society for their innovation in patient involvement.

The team have been rapidly developing and expanding their services since 2000, where patient involvement has been critical from the start. Their care has included chronic respiratory support, early discharge and palliative care services, Breathe Easy Support Group, and a close relationship with London Ambulance Service. The team’s innovation has stretched as far as a 24 hour, seven days a week non-invasive ventilation service and Quit Smoking support.

All short-listed and winning entries will be published in a book of good practice, highlighting the Whittington as a centre of excellence. Dr Stern said: “These are hotly competed for awards and we are very honoured to have received one, as well as how pleased we are to be noted in a book of good practice. This is the second award our team has received within the year and it is very nice to be recognised again – we have a strong team working here.”

The presentation of the BTS Silver Jubilee Awards will be held during the President’s Reception at the QE II Centre in London on 6 December, where the Whittington Hospital’s COPD team will accept their award of the commendation.
