National Pathology Week: 3-9 November 2008

National Pathology Week: 3-9 November 2008
The first National Pathology Week takes place this year from 3-9 November. This aim of this nationwide event is to raise awareness of pathology amongst health care professionals, the general public and school students. It is a great opportunity to promote the work that pathologists and allied laboratory professionals, such as clinical and biomedical scientists undertake in the laboratory. Around 70% of patients, whether attending NHS hospitals or their GP’s, undergo pathology tests as part of their diagnostic work-up. From a financial view, pathology accounts for 4 per cent of the total money spent on health care each year in the UK.

Pathologists study the causes of disease and the ways in which the various disease processes affect our bodies. As most of pathology is done “behind the scenes” people are largely unaware of its vital ongoing contribution to modern medicine. The Whittington laboratory receives an increasing number of samples year on year and are carrying out a wider range of tests than ever before. It is essential that tests are carried out quickly and to quality assured standards. Pathology professionals advise their healthcare colleagues about the most appropriate tests for a given patient, and interpret or explain what they mean. For these reasons pathologists are core members of the various multidisciplinary teams involved in patient care.

Events to mark the week are as follows:

Planned events include a pathology themed quiz at the medical grand round at lunch time on Wednesday 5 November and a postgraduate training session in histopathology for junior doctors (date tbc).

On Thursday 6 November, between 9.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. the haematology and biochemistry departments will be conducting tours for patients attending the laboratory for blood tests. Patients attending selected outpatient clinics for their biopsy results during this week will also be given the opportunity to meet with a histopathologist, view their microscopy slides and discuss their biopsy reports.
