Whittington succeeds at Nursing Times awards
The Nursing Times Awards took place on Wednesday 12 November, attended by Prime Minister Gordon Brown. As he praised the progression of the NHS in the year of its 60th anniversary he considered the effort and achievements of nurses that often go unsung and unreported.
The Whittington Hospital’s nursing and midwifery team had an extremely successful turnout and was the only hospital in the country short listed for three awards this year. The Chief Nursing Officer Leadership award saw Deborah Wheeler, director of nursing, as a finalist for her efforts in creating a strong senior nursing team, which has raised the standards of care in all areas.

Similarly, in the Visible Leadership Team, Deborah Wheeler was highly commended as a runner up for the Infection Control award.
Finally the Maternity Services category was awarded to the Whittington for the wonderful maternity care for women in prison. Midwife team leader Hazel Cathcart, and midwives Jayne Padmore –Wood and Carmel Mulligan, have led on the development and delivery of maternity services to women in resident in HMP Holloway. Providing NHS midwifery care in prison is not easy, so new and innovative ways were needed to ensure both the safe custody and the complex maternity needs of these fundamentally disadvantaged women were met. Of this award the judges said: “Inspirational! A driven midwife champion who has developed a service despite many obstacles and challenges. A true trailblazer who has demonstrably improved services for a challenging client group.”
The hospital congratulates all of the finalists. These nominations demonstrate the high quality of nursing and midwifery care at the Whittington.
