Whittington, one of most improved hospitals in the country for mortality rates

Whittington, one of most improved hospitals in the country for mortality ratesThe Hospital Guide 2008, published by Dr Foster, shows the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust as being one of four trusts in the country as having a hospital standardised mortality ratio (HSMR) significantly below average.

The Whittington has improved for three consecutive years, dropping over 30 per cent in mortality rates during that period.

Celia Ingham Clark, The Whittington's Medical Director says "I am delighted that the Whittington continues to have one of the lowest mortality rates in London. Our staff prioritise patient safety and work hard to continue to improve the quality of care for our patients"

Tom Moloney, Chief Executive of Dr Foster Intelligence, said: “We’re pleased to highlight in this year’s Hospital Guide that Whittington Hospital NHS Trust continues to reduce its mortality rate and is one of the most improved in the country. Clearly this is good news for patients and families and testament to the continued hard work of all hospital staff.”

The HSMR is based on data that is routinely collected for England. The calculations make adjustments for sex, age group, the method of hospital admission, the primary diagnosis and the socioeconomic conditions of the patients’ place of residence, and other adjustments where appropriate.
