Whittington Hospital welcomes mayors of London

Whittington Hospital welcomes mayors of LondonEdward Lord deputy chairman of the Whittington Hospital welcomed the Lord Mayor of the City of London and 31 mayors of London to breakfast at the Whittington Hospital on Sunday 19 April at the start of one of London's most colourful traditions - the walk from Highgate Hill to the City following the steps of Dick Whittington

Lord Mayor Ian Luder said: "It is a splendid opportunity to get all the London Mayors out of their offices on a Sunday Walk for their individual charities. We will retrace the journey taken by our Mayoral ancestor, Dick Whittington, who held my office and wore my chain in 1397, 1406 and 1419.

"Whittington really was an excellent role model. Not only did he leave all his wealth to charity, he built almshouses, a hospital for single mothers; drinking fountains and even a 64 seat public loo! "

As in previous years, the Mayors in their robes and chains meandering through the streets and heading for the City of London were a special sight for all.

At the Whittington breakfast the trust's vice chairman Edward Lord also launched an appeal for the Care of Older People. He told those present that as chairman of the appeal he is hoping to raise £100,000 for the Jeffrey Kelson unit at the Whittington Hospital, which is in desperate need of treatment equipment, rehabilitation resources and refurbishment of the day rooms by the end of 2009.
