The Whittington Hospital is the second safest in the country

The Whittington Hospital is the second best trust in the country for low mortality rates. The information, published on the NHS Choices website, is taken from the Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR), which is a statistical calculation that measures the overall rate of deaths within an NHS Trust, then comparing it with a national benchmark.

The average score is 100 and the Whittington rate has been below this figure for several years and has been steadily reducing. It is now 73.1 and is the second lowest nationally. This is further confirmation that the Whittington is a safe place to be a patient. This information comes as great news as we are in the process of implementing our Patient Safety First campaign, which is designed to help us further reduce deaths in hospital as well as helping to reduce complications.

Celia Ingham Clark, the Whittington's Medical Director says, "I am absolutely delighted that the Whittington has continued to have not only one of the lowest mortality rates in London, but now in the country. Our staff prioritise patient safety and continue to work hard at improving the quality of care for our patients."

The HSMR is based on data that is routinely collected for England. The calculations make adjustments for sex, age group, the method of hospital admission, the primary diagnosis and the socio-economic conditions of the patients' place of residence, as well as other adjustments where appropriate.
