Whittington doctors run 130 kilometres in 24 hours

Whittington doctors take up a challengeOn Sunday 14 June 2009, a team of 20 dedicated individuals including three Whittington consultants, Urologist Mr Ron Miller, general surgeon Mr Hasan Mukhtar and ITU specialist Dr Hugh Montgomery will set off for North West Spain to begin a testing 130 kilometre walk, over a period of 5-6 days, in aid of the SafeHands Pilgrims Walk for Life.

The walk, which starts on Sunday 14 June 2009 and covers up to 130 kilometres of the famous El Camino de Santiago or Way of St James’ ancient pilgrim’s route to Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain, has attracted widespread international interest.

In addition to the 20 walkers, eight ‘Extremists’ (including the three Whittington doctors) have accepted the challenge to walk the entire 130 kilometres in 24 hours!

This fund raising campaign, aims to raise £350,000 in support of SafeHands safe motherhood projects in Ethiopia.

"It is fortunately rare for any of us to have to run for our lives. But it is a privilege to be allowed to run for the lives of others. While our research focuses on the health benefits of recreational exercise (and the genes which mediate these benefits), we are all to aware that such interest is of little relevance to most of the world's population. In many countries, even having a child can prove a curse, due to injuries sustained. We must do what we can for such people." says Hugh Montgomery.
