The Pearly King visits the Whittington
The Pearly Kings and Queens have been operating since 1875. Known for their famous smoked pearl buttons sewn onto bellbottomed trousers, the Kings and Queens have been tirelessly raising money for charities since founder and orphan, Henry Croft, first took goods from the east end markets he worked at to orphanages. So it was a delight for the hospital to welcome pearly King of Finsbury, John Walters and his son Darren, the pearly Prince of Finsbury.
Having raised four hundred pounds for the hospital, John and Darren spent time with patients in the care of the elderly ward, sang cockney songs to staff and explained about the heritage of the organisation, before presenting the ward with a cheque for two hundred pounds.
They then made their way to NICU to present a further cheque for two hundred pounds and again talk to staff, explain their history whilst discussing the developments the ward has seen and enjoyed.
The Whittington would like to express its thanks for their donation and time.
