International day of the midwife

International midwife cake
The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) is responsible for the organisation each year of the International Day of the Midwife which is held annually on 5 May. The aim of the day is to celebrate midwifery and to bring awareness of the importance of midwives' work to as many people as possible.

The first international day of the midwife was launched in May 1991 with the theme 'Towards safe birth for all by the year 2000'. This is certainly a theme that The Whittington maternity team consistently strive towards.

Each year has a different theme and this year marked an occasion for ‘every individual midwife to think about the many others in the profession, to make new contacts within and outside midwifery, and to widen the knowledge of what midwives do for the world.’

In the years leading up to 2015, ICM will use the overarching theme “The World Needs Midwives Today More Than Ever” as part of an ongoing campaign to highlight the need for midwives. Here at The Whittington we have just appointed two of our student midwives – Mayuko Hill and Natalie Stebbing who qualified in March 2010. The rest of their cohort gained employment elsewhere in the UK and will take with them the achievements of their training from both here and the Middlesex University.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish them well in their future careers and also to the current students who are undertaking their training with us. I would like to give a special acknowledgement to all the midwives, mentors and sign-off mentors who dedicate their time and expertise with the students to ensure that their training here at The Whittington is a valued and rich experience.

Thank you team
