National breastfeeding awareness week

the awareness teamThe week of 21 June marked National Breastfeeding Awareness Week. The Whittington hosted several events to celebrate our achievements as we have persistent breastfeeding initiation rates of over 90 per cent. This is in part thanks to the peer supporters who have been trained and funded by the Breastfeeding Network in Islington. They support mothers who breastfeed in the hospital and the community and have made a positive impact on breastfeeding rates being sustained longer.

Our celebrations and events included a breastfeeding stall at the Islington Proactive event, held at the Emirates stadium on 19 June, a stall at the front of the hospital N19 foyer to give information to the public and a thank you tea party on 25 June for all the peer supporters who have done a fantastic job in the last year.

Our infant feeding specialist midwives Pippa Faulkes and Sally Crowther worked incredibly hard in organising the events and held a quiz and raffle for women and staff. We wish to thank Lynn Herrick photography, Felix and Lilly's Baby Shop in Islington, Paul A Young Chocolates, Active Birth Centre and Green Baby Islington for their generous donations of prizes for the raffle and quiz.
