John Farrell MBE retires
John Farrell MBE, The Whittington’s director of pharmaceutical services retired on 18 October 2010, having worked at The Whittington since 1982. From 1986 he has been the director of pharmaceutical services for four NHS Trusts in Camden and Islington, The Whittington Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, University College London Hospitals and Camden and Islington Community Trust following the formation of the Trusts.
He had responsibility for the management, training and development of 340 staff and was accountable for a drugs budget in excess of £200 million. He did a tremendous job in providing an absolutely outstanding pharmaceutical service, always placing the patient at the centre of he did. This year John recently received an MBE for his contribution to pharmaceutical services and was made a fellow of both the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the School of Pharmacy University of London.
Born at The Whittington John was always a tremendous support to fundraising initiatives at the hospital. Including procuring London Marathon Golden Bond places which have raised well over £100,000 for The Whittington. He also ran the marathon several times for the hospital.
At a farewell tea on Monday 18 October chief executive Rob Larkman and Professor David Patterson gave an overview of John’s illustrious career and thanks for all his work, before John himself gave a few words of thanks and praise to his colleagues. The Whittington would like to sincerely thank John for all his contributions over the years and wish him well in his retirement.
