Steven Packer looks at bacteria

National Pathology week

The first week November was National Pathology Week and Newara Ramadan, from Microbiology, with assistance from Fran Winch and Andrew McGlinchey and many of the other staff in the department, put on a display in the Atrium to promote the occasion.
The backdrop was an exhibition of photographs of laboratory life, including pictures of staff at work and the organisms they might grow, with informal captions describing them. There were leaflets about the career path for Biomedical Scientists, the people who test the samples in all the Pathology departments, and another with information about aspects of the lab and the human body beginning with the letters P A T H O L O G Y. You could even look down a microscope to see the bacteria of the type that cause cystitis as well as other organisms.

On a less serious note, you could top up your biro supply, get a colourful fluffy bug to stick onto your computer (or anywhere else that takes your fancy) or even have a chocolate. The stand was visited by a continuous stream of staff and patients for the three hours it was open and the Microbiology staff were able to answer the questions asked. Thanks go to Newara, Fran, Andy and the other Microbiology staff who put a lot of work into supporting the event.
