Dr Albert Rinsler

Dr Albert Rinsler, The Whittington’s beloved archivist and historian died on 25 November 2010.

Since his retirement in 1992 Albert created the most marvellous exhibitions connected to the history of the hospital and of course wrote and produced the Royal Northern book which has sold countless copies.

Dr Rinsler qualified from King’s College Hospital in 1946. After working in Wales for some years he moved to become a GP in North London. He was honorary clinical photographer to The Whittington and Royal Northern Hospitals from 1954 to 1963.

Albert had a great interest in medical history and researched the story behind Luke Fildes’ famous Victorian painting, The Doctor, which was published in the Journal of Biography and has lectured extensively on this subject. In 2005 he co-produced a short documentary film, Two Pioneers of Surgery, based on an 8 mm film which he originally filmed in 1943 when he was a pre-clincial medical student.
