What to do after a tooth extraction?

Patient Information Leaflet

What should I avoid on the day?

  • Do not rinse your mouth or spit for the rest of the day.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Do not have very hot or very cold food or drinks until the numb feeling has worn off.
  • Do not touch the blood clot or tooth socket with your tongue or fingers.

What should I do on the day?

  • Rest and avoid hard exercise or heavy activity.
  • Take painkillers before the numb feeling wears off, if you need them.
  • Avoid painkillers that contain aspirin.
  • Eat soft foods.
  • Brush your other teeth, but take care around the tooth socket.

What should I do if it bleeds?

  • Use the swab you were given.
  • Put it over the tooth socket and press firmly by biting on it or using your finger.
  • Keep the pressure on for at least 20 minutes before removing the swab.

When can I start salt-water mouth rinses?

  • Start warm salt-water mouth rinses 12 hours after the tooth was removed.
  • Fill a cup with warm water.
  • Add one level teaspoon of salt and stir until it dissolves.
  • Take a mouthful and hold it near the tooth socket until the water cools.
  • Spit it out and repeat until the cup is empty.
  • You can do this after meals and as often as needed.

What about antibiotics, stitches or packing?

  • If you have been prescribed antibiotics, take them as instructed and finish the course.
  • If stitches or packing were placed, they will usually dissolve within 2 to 3 weeks.

When should I ask for help?

  • If you are worried about severe pain, swelling or bleeding, contact the clinic where your tooth was removed or call Community Dental Services on 020 3316 8353.
