Full story

Monday 12 May is Florence Nightingale’s birthday, and the day we celebrate International Nurse’s Day.

Florence is regarded to be the founder of modern nursing. She was so dedicated to nursing that instead of resting and catching up on sleep, she used to do night time rounds and tend to patients while carrying a lamp, hence her nickname, ‘lady with the lamp’.

A fun fact about Florence Nightingale is that she was named after the city she was born in.  She was from a very wealthy family, and grew up with servants and two lovely houses – a winter home in Hampshire and a summer home in Derbyshire.

Her parents tried to deter her from becoming a nurse, as in the 1800’s, nursing was not considered a respectful profession and hospitals in that period were filthy.  But she was determined to become a nurse so she went abroad to study nursing in Germany.

A HUGE thank you to our nurses for continuing the legacy of Florence Nightingale through their dedication and professionalism.  We’re so proud of the high standard of care our nursing staff give to people within our community.
