Work Experience

Whittington Health receives many requests for work experience or work shadowing from local children, young people and students every year.
As a major local employer we aim to help students understand and get a feel for their chosen areas of work, which will help them make decisions about their future careers.
Due to high demand, Whittington Health prioritises applications from the boroughs of Islington, Haringey and Camden. Applicants must be attending a local school or college of further education and need to demonstrate an interest in the placement in their application.
Please also note that:
  • Placements cannot be for more than two weeks
  • Work experience students need to be age 16 and above at the time of the placement
  • Placements in paediatrics, the emergency department and the mortuary are not permitted

Clinical and general work experience placements (excluding medical work experience)

These placements are aimed at students who wish to improve their chances of finding paid employment by undertaking a period of work experience at the Trust.
General work placements are usually for a one or two week period, but they can just be for a day if needed.  Whittington Health NHS Trust does not offer a centralised work experience programme administration, however there are many responsible clinicians and staff in senior posts that would be willing to support a few placements a year.  It is for an individual department to decide if the work experience placement can be accommodated and to make the necessary arrangements. Please note that because these placements require supervision, many staff will not be able to assist due to their own clinical commitments, which have to take priority.
Individuals interested in a placement with the Trust, should contact the department or the manager directly to secure a work placement.  The specific manager/department can be contacted through the hospitalís main switchboard number: 020 7272 3070.
Once the department /manager has approved a placement in principle, they will forward an application form to the student.  The department or manager will make a final decision based on the completed application, inform the student of the outcome and make any necessary arrangements.

Other types of placement

The Whittington is part of the UCL medical school widening participation 'Target Medicine' scheme.  The Whittington does not offer any other type of work experience for those wishing to study medicine.
