The ‘Breath Better, Do More’ /Pulmonary rehabilitation programme is an NHS service and free to attend.

You do not need any special clothing, just wear something loose and shoes with a good grip. It is important to bring your inhalers and or GTN with you and a bottle of water.

Can I bring someone along to support me?

Yes. This is important and helpful for many people. Let the team know that this is what you would like so we can plan this together.

I don’t speak good English. Can I still join?

Yes. It is important that everyone has access to pulmonary rehabilitation. We can arrange an interpreter to support you during sessions. Please tell the team what you need.

Is it safe?

Yes. You will be assessed by a Physiotherapist before enrolling to make sure the exercises are right for you. They will help you build fitness safely, at a pace that feels manageable.

I’ve been referred after a hospital stay for flare up/ chest infection

This programme is the next step to help you regain your strength and confidence. Starting this programme within four weeks of leaving the hospital can help you recover faster and stop you from needing to go back.

I am a smoker. Do I need to quit before I enrol?

No. You don’t have to quit before joining. If you ever feel ready, the team can refer you for specialist support to help you stop. We understand that timing matters.

I already get breathless which feels uncomfortable. It feels wrong to do something that brings breathlessness on.

That is completely understandable. Breathlessness can feel scary. Many people find that after 3 to 4 weeks that they can do more before feeling breathless and that recovery becomes quicker. The team will show you ways to manage breathlessness so you can feel more in control.

Should someone more deserving get my place.

Everyone referred to pulmonary rehabilitation can benefit. Your health and wellbeing matter just as much as anyone else.

I already walk as much as I’m able to. How will pulmonary rehabilitation help me day to day?

Walking is great exercise. Many people say that they can walk further, climb stairs more easily and feel safer knowing that staff are there to guide and monitor them. Everyday tasks such as carrying bags, making the bed, doing the housework or gardening feel easier.

Exercising with others can also be more enjoyable and helps keep motivation up. Pulmonary rehabilitation builds confidence as well as fitness.

I find it awkward to speak up in groups.

The staff make sure no one feels uncomfortable. You will not be put on the spot and can take part in discussions as much or as little as you want.

It sounds like a big commitment. I may struggle to fit it in.

That is a fair concern. It does take some commitment, and this might feel overwhelming. It is important to attend regularly for the duration of the course (6 to 8 weeks). There is usually a choice of venues and session times available.

The team can help you get over any barriers that you have and advise on any other options that may suit you better.

Will everyone else in the group get to know private information about me?

No. Your assessment is private, and your personal information is not shared. Everyone in the group knows what it is like to live with breathlessness, but you decide what you share.

Confidentiality is taken seriously, and your privacy will always be respected.

Is transport provided?

The team will help you find the easiest routes and can tell you about services such as Dial-A-Ride and Taxi Card.

I’m not sure it will be for me. What should I do?

Talk to the team - they can help you decide.  Many people who felt unsure at first said “I’m glad I gave it a try”. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

The advice from other patients who felt the same is “Just give it a go - you have nothing to lose”.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please speak to your pulmonary rehabilitation team. We are here to help.
