What should I wear or bring with me?
You do not need any special clothing, just wear something loose and shoes with a good grip. It is important to bring your inhalers and or GTN with you and a bottle of water.
Can I bring someone along to support me?
Yes. This is important and helpful for many people. Let the team know that this is what you would like so we can plan this together.
I don’t speak good English. Can I still join?
Yes. It is important that everyone has access to pulmonary rehabilitation. We can arrange an interpreter to support you during sessions. Please tell the team what you need.
Is it safe?
Yes. You will be assessed by a Physiotherapist before enrolling to make sure the exercises are right for you. They will help you build fitness safely, at a pace that feels manageable.
I’ve been referred after a hospital stay for flare up/ chest infection
This programme is the next step to help you regain your strength and confidence. Starting this programme within four weeks of leaving the hospital can help you recover faster and stop you from needing to go back.
I am a smoker. Do I need to quit before I enrol?
No. You don’t have to quit before joining. If you ever feel ready, the team can refer you for specialist support to help you stop. We understand that timing matters.
I already get breathless which feels uncomfortable. It feels wrong to do something that brings breathlessness on.
That is completely understandable. Breathlessness can feel scary. Many people find that after 3 to 4 weeks that they can do more before feeling breathless and that recovery becomes quicker. The team will show you ways to manage breathlessness so you can feel more in control.
Should someone more deserving get my place.
Everyone referred to pulmonary rehabilitation can benefit. Your health and wellbeing matter just as much as anyone else.
I already walk as much as I’m able to. How will pulmonary rehabilitation help me day to day?
I find it awkward to speak up in groups.
The staff make sure no one feels uncomfortable. You will not be put on the spot and can take part in discussions as much or as little as you want.
It sounds like a big commitment. I may struggle to fit it in.
Will everyone else in the group get to know private information about me?
Is transport provided?
The team will help you find the easiest routes and can tell you about services such as Dial-A-Ride and Taxi Card.
