Power Infrastructure Project

About the Power Infrastructure Project

About the Power Infrastructure Project

The current power running through Whittington Hospital is 2600 KVA which in the past, has been enough to power our needs. But with new major development projects on the horizon, this level of power is no longer enough, so the new equipment will enable us to reach 8500 KVA - more than 3 times the amount of power.

And this additional power will move our hospital away from fully relying on fossil gas fuel as primary source for heating, to a modern electric heat pumps supplied of green electricity. By completion of the project, which will take a few years to complete, we will be looking at an incredible 80% decrease in carbon emissions.

The project will also help us save £15k on our annual electricity consumption by 21000Kwhrs, meaning we can divert funds to other areas of our Trust.

Why this project is needed

Reliable power is critical to delivering safe patient care. Our existing electrical infrastructure is ageing and requires significant upgrades to meet modern healthcare demands and future growth.

The Power Infrastructure Project will strengthen and modernise our energy systems to ensure:

  • Continuous, reliable electricity supply
  • Improved resilience during outages
  • Compliance with modern safety standards
  • Capacity to support new clinical equipment and digital systems
  • Reduced environmental impact through more efficient systems

What the project includes

  • Upgrading entire electrical High Voltage and Low Voltage power network
  • Building a new multi-store energy centre, bulk stores and office development at our hospital site
  • Increasing the power supply to site
  • Bringing the hospital up to a complaint standard

What this means for patients and residents

We are committed to:

  • Minimising disruption to clinical services
  • Maintaining safe access routes
  • Keeping noise and construction impacts to a minimum
  • Providing clear, regular communication

There will be no interruption to emergency services.
