Online training sessions available from e-Learning for Healthcare (efh):
elfh is NHS England’s online learning platform. You can access the 2 virtual courses below with your NHS OpenAthens username and password. Please contact the library if you need assistance.

How to Search the Literature Effectively
These modules are designed to help the healthcare workforce (clinical and non-clinical) build confidence to search published literature for articles and evidence relevant to their work, study and research. The modules are short (each taking no more than 20 minutes to complete) and may be ‘dipped into’ for reference, or completed to obtain a certificate.
This programme aims to support NHS colleagues with understanding the different methods and tools to carry out critical appraisal of research, through 8 bite-sized modules.
By the end of the programme, learners will be able to: describe the terms “critical appraisal”, “bias”, “internal validity” and “external validity”; distinguish between different types of study designs and their strengths and limitations; assess the appropriateness of methods used to conduct a randomised controlled trial, systematic review, diagnostic study and qualitative study; interpret commonly reported results found in clinical papers; and identify different types of critical appraisal tools and their strengths and limitations.
Journal Clubs
Noclor Journal Club
Join us in the library or online for our monthly Noclor Journal Club for Nurses and AHPs. In these sessions we'll go over an accessible, interesting paper (or something else...) as a group, discussing its strengths and weaknesses (maybe using a checklist) and what it could mean for your practice. Previous meetings have covered papers like "The role of dog therapy in clinical recovery and improving quality of life: a randomized, controlled trial" and "Zombie apocalypse simulation: elevating mental health nursing education". Call us on 020 7288 3580 or email us at whl@nhs.net to book your place on any of the sessions below.
Upcoming meetings:
- Tuesday 16/12/25, 11am-12.30pm. Paper we'll be reading: All I want for Christmas…is a precisely defined research question. Santa runs experiments with his reindeer to see which is better for their flying performance: a bunch of carrots or a mince pie? How will different estimands effect our view of the results?
- Tuesday 13/1/26, 3-4.30pm. As we may well be feeling the effects of the festive season and perhaps going on a health kick or taking part in "Dry January", we'll be reading Temporary abstinence challenges: What do we need to know?
- Wednesday 18/2/26, 2-3.30pm. Because we'll all be sick of the dark evenings, we'll be looking at the evidence behind them via The British Sleep Society position statement on Daylight Saving Time in the UK
- Friday 13/3/26, 2-3pm. In honour of Easter being just round the corner, we'll be reading A bite of dark chocolate? Black humour in mental health services
- Monday 27/4/26, 3-4.30pm. After Easter's excess, we'll be reading Patients’ experiences with GLP1-RAs – a systematic review, to see what exactly the evidence base says about Ozempic and other weight-loss drugs, and to examine this particular study's methodological rigour...
- Wednesday 27/5/26, 12-1.30pm. Paper TBA.
- Thursday 18/6/26, 10-11.30am. Paper TBA.
OT Journal Club
The monthly Occupational Therapy Journal Club meets in the library to talk about a recent research paper as selected by Occupational Therapy colleagues working across NLFT. If you would like to take part in these fun, discursive sessions then please contact the facilitator, Assistant Librarian Catherine Wardle: catherinewardle@nhs.net
Reflective Reading Club
Tailored to nurses approaching revalidation (but open to all), these sessions provide attendees with 3 hours of CPD for their portfolios. Please see our dedicated page for more information.
