Supervised Practice

Nurses who have qualified overseas

Pavlina Stumpfova is a nurse from the Czech republic who qualified as a general nurse in 1996 and then went on to study intensive care nursing in Prague. As part of her career development she wanted to learn English and came to the UK as an au pair initially and undertook intensive English lessons. Once she had mastered English Pavlina began to find out about practising as a nurse in the UK and contacted the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This was quite a long process but in May 2002 she started a supervised practice programme here at the Whittington. Since being at the Whittington Pavlina has participated in a supervised practice programme, this has included a range of study sessions related to working in the NHS and the policies and procedures followed here at the trust. Pavlina then worked on Coyle ward where she gained experience in surgery and moved onto Reckitt ward where she had a opportunity to work in medical nursing. Pavlina was so happy on Reckitt ward she has secured a staff nurse position on the ward. She states that the Whittington is a busy but friendly hospital, ‘staff are incredibly supportive and have made me feel very welcome’. It’s been a challenge working in the NHS in a different country but Pavlina has now applied for her registration with the NMC and is looking forward to staying at the Whittington for some time to come.
