Proposals for a new interim model of care for inpatient child and adolescent mental health services in North Central and North East London

The NHS has developed some proposals for how inpatient mental health care is provided for children and young people across North Central London.

The proposals include:
  • commissioning three additional beds at The Beacon Centre in Barnet
  • extending our outreach team to help children and young people avoid being admitted to hospital
  • having more specialists to support those with learning disabilities and autism in our home treatment and outreach teams
The proposed arrangements would be for the short-to-medium-term – for approximately the next 18 months – while the NHS develops a long-term solution for how these important services are organised.

Simmons House Adolescent Unit is an in-patient psychiatric unit. The unit has places for a maximum of 12 young people. In individual single bedrooms.

The average length of treatment admissions is between 6 and 9 months, but can be up to a year. The length of stay at Simmons House depends on the young person's needs. Acute admissions tend to stay for up to six weeks

Adolescents and their families or carers receive an individually planned and structured treatment package combining as appropriate:

  1. Psychiatric assessment and medication
  2. Family therapy (which is often video taped)
  3. Individual therapy
  4. Occupational therapy
  5. Group work and education.

All young people have to have a place to live in the community during their time at Simmons House. The unit cannot be an adolescent’s home as adolescents should not have their home in hospital.
