Having a groin ultrasound
A groin ultrasound is a safe and simple imaging procedure, targeting the area between your abdomen and upper thigh. Primarily, it's used for inspecting muscles, soft tissues, and identifying common issues like hernias (inguinal or femoral), lumps, or areas of pain and trauma. This ultrasound is particularly useful at detecting conditions such as hernias, groin lumps, swelling, and abnormal lymph nodes.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Your examination will be performed by a sonographer, a specialist trained in ultrasound imaging. The sonographer will introduce themselves and confirm your identity and the procedure you are having.
You will be asked to lie back comfortably on the on an examination table. You may be asked to change into a gown or lower the bottom half of your clothing to allow access to the groin area. Ultrasound gel will be applied to the area and the sonographer will move the scanning device over your groin. This usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes and shouldn't hurt, though you might feel a bit of discomfort if the area is already a bit tender. For hernia investigations, you may be asked to stand or strain to better display the hernia.
Preparing for Your Ultrasound
Wear two-piece clothing for convenient access to the groin area.
Typically, no special preparation is needed.
Receiving Your Ultrasound Results
Once the examination is complete, the sonographer will review the images and prepare a detailed written report for your referring doctor. The process typically takes approximately one week. You will need to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to discuss these results.
Please remember that the sonographer cannot provide you with results immediately after the exam, as they may need to discuss the findings with a radiologist.
It is always a good idea to discuss any questions or concerns with your healthcare provider to fully understand the procedure and its implications. Always consult with a healthcare professional to interpret the results and guide your next steps.
What to Keep in Mind
While a groin ultrasound is an excellent diagnostic tool, it's worth noting that not every condition can be detected with this method. Depending on your symptoms or the results of your scan, your doctor may recommend further investigations.
