Does my child need speech therapy?
Your child may benefit from a speech sound assessment with a Speech and Language Therapist if:
- Your child’s speech is difficult to understand
- Friends and family frequently ask you what your child has said
- Your child is showing frustration about not being understood
- You have noticed your child is not using certain sounds, that would be expected at their age
- You have noticed your child is using an unusual or unexpected sound substitution pattern
Children under the age of 5 can be referred to the Early Years Speech and Language Therapy service with parental consent. The referral can be made by any professional known to the child using the IANDS Referral Form.
If your child is school-aged, speak to your child’s Class Teacher or the school’s SENCo in the first instance.
