Sensory Regulation Stragegies - Video Examples video transcript
In this video you can watch videos showing examples of sensory activities that you can try when playing together with your child at home.
Here are two examples of alerting activities: bouncing on a ball and swinging in a sheet. These are fun activities, easy to do, and engaging, to get your child’s best attention, just before you want them to concentrate. Either just before playing a game with them, getting them to sit for a meal, or doing an activity at the table.
Bouncing on a ball
Song: “[Name] is bouncing, bouncing, bouncing, [Name] is bouncing, on the ball. 5,4,3,2,1, whoosh!”
Swinging in a sheet
Song “Okay, ready, steady, go! [Name] is swinging, swinging, swinging, [Name] is swinging, up, up, up, [Name] is swinging, swinging, swinging, [Name] is swinging, up, up, up. 5,4,3,2,1, finished!”
These are nice examples of calming activities which are easy to do at home. Try them. Your child will let you know if they like or dislike them, by either relaxing into it, and wanting more of it, or by trying to get away. Don’t force them, but try to find the one that works best for them.
Bouncing ball over body
“Squeeze, lie down, head down, head down, squeeze, squeeze”.
Firm squeezes to arms and legs
“Squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze”
Rolling up in a mat “Ready, steady, go! [Name] is rolling, rolling, rolling, [Name] is rolling, up, up, up. [Name] is unrolling, unrolling, unrolling, [Name] is unrolling, and finished!”
Squeezing knees to chest
“Ready, steady, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze!”
