Improvements in the service provided by Whittington Health NHS Trust are officially recognised today by the Care Quality Commission.
The Trust has retained its overall rating of Good from its previous inspection two years ago and the hospital site has improved from Requires Improvement to Good.
The inspection, which took place in the autumn, looked at four core services: Outpatients Department; Critical Care; Community and Young Persons Services; and Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
The report summarising the Trust’s improvements confirmed that, overall, the Trust was rated Outstanding in the Caring domain and Good in the Well Led domain. A number of areas in the hospital outpatient department improved from Requires Improvement to Good and improvements in the hospital’s Critical Care unit resulted in the Safe domain rating being raised to Good.
The CQC noted:
- that leaders and all staff shared a common vision on supporting their local community
- outstanding practice in the hospital one-stop breast and skin cancer outpatient clinics
- that patient outcomes in critical care were found to be in-line with or better than national average
- improvements in how the critical care team manage and learn from incidents
- good multidisciplinary and joint working for children, young people and their families
- good medicines management systems with medicines appropriately prescribed, administered, recorded and stored
All three of the trust’s core services – acute, community and mental health – are rated overall as Good, with community services having two Outstanding ratings for the Caring and Well-Led domains. The Trust is already addressing the areas of improvement required by the CQC in our critical care and Simmons House CAMHS service.
Siobhan Harrington, Chief Executive of the Whittington Health NHS Trust said:
“It is very encouraging to hear that we are doing the right things for our patients at Whittington Health. Our focus is to ensure our patients experience high-quality care and to continuously improve our services. Our ambition is to achieve an Outstanding rating.
“I am delighted that the achievements of our talented staff have been recognised by the CQC in their report today, as I know that their tremendous effort ensures our continuous improvement.”
