Today the Tynemouth Road Haringey Children & Young People Health Hub celebrated the official opening of its new therapeutic landscape garden. The new urban green space has been designed to support health and wellbeing for local children, families, and staff.

“This garden will be life-changing for thousands of children and families who use the Hub - not to mention the positive impact on staff. It will give children something to look forward to - knowing there's a wilderness to be explored before, after and even during their visit - and help to reduce the feelings of stress and anxiety that inevitably come with a health appointment. A three-hour autism assessment, for example, is very draining, so to have a break outside in nature - or to actually undertake part of the assessment in the garden - will be transformational. We are so grateful to our supporters for making this project a reality” said Sam Lister, Head of Whittington Health Charity.

Selina Douglas, CEO of Whittington Health NHS Trust, joined community partners, staff, and supporters at the launch to mark the transformation of a once-unused space into a vibrant, sustainable garden. The project was brought to life through Whittington Health Charity’s fundraising efforts and a successful bid for £150,000 from the Greener Communities Fund – a partnership between NHS Charities Together and the environmental charity Hubbub, supported by Starbucks.
Created by award-winning designers Wild City Studios, the garden was developed in collaboration with Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, SEND Power, service users, and staff to ensure it meets the unique needs of the children and young people it serves.

Jon Goodwin, Head of Grants at NHS Charities Together, said: “There’s a strong link between spending time outdoors and improved health and wellbeing. That’s why, through our Greener Communities Fund, delivered in partnership with Hubbub and funded by Starbucks, we are improving access to quality green spaces in healthcare settings and beyond.

These projects play an important role in our wider commitment to help improve the health of NHS patients, staff, and communities, and in turn reduce the pressure on overstretched NHS services. We very much look forward to hearing how the people of Haringey benefit from this wonderful new garden and are grateful to everyone who made it possible.”

The new space is now open and ready to be enjoyed by children, families, and staff who use the Tynemouth Road Haringey Children & Young People Health Hub throughout the summer and beyond.
