Full story

Whittington Health NHS Trust has secured planning permission for the next phase of the major upgrade to the hospital’s power infrastructure, marking an important step in improving resilience, sustainability and patient care.

The approved plans include a new building on the Whittington Hospital site to accommodate a replacement energy centre, bulk storage facilities and supporting office space. The development will replace the existing Old Boiler House and provide modern infrastructure to support the hospital’s future needs.

The project has been shaped through close collaboration with Islington Council’s planning officers and aligns with the Trust’s long-term Estate Strategy. Once complete, the new facilities will strengthen the hospital’s ability to maintain safe and reliable services, particularly during periods of high demand or emergency situations.

The upgraded power infrastructure will also support key clinical developments at the hospital, including the approved Maternity and Neonatal transformation programme and delivery of Start Well.

A central benefit of the project is its contribution to sustainability. Once the project is complete the hospital will look to move away from reliance on fossil fuels for heating and move towards using electric heat pumps powered by green electricity instead. This is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 80%, supporting the Trust’s commitment to a net zero carbon estate.

Whittington Health NHS Trust would like to thank Islington Council and all our partners involved for their support in bringing this important project forward.
