16 Feb 2026

Patient and Visitor car park will close permanently on the Whittington Hospital Site on 1 April.

Full story

From 1 April 2026 there will be no car parking on the Whittington Hospital site for patients, service users, or visitors, except for people who hold a blue disabled badge or meet specific national exception criteria.

We know this will be difficult for some people, especially those who already find travel to hospital stressful or tiring. We have not taken this decision lightly.

A piece of land next to our hospital site that we lease for staff car parking has been approved for redevelopment by its landowner. This means from 1 April we will lose 57 of our current 134 parking bays. We need to prioritise the limited spaces we have for colleagues who provide patient care, including those working night shifts or on call.

Drop off and pick up will still be available for up to 20 minutes This will be enforced using automatic number plate recognition technology with fines being issued to anyone staying over 20 minutes. If you are being dropped off in a car (including taxis), you will need use our Highgate Hill entrance.

The hospital is also well connected by public transport. You can plan your journey using the TfL journey planner by clicking here.

Exempt groups:

If you fall into one of the following groups, you can still park on site for free:
  • Disabled people This includes blue badge holders attending hospital as patients or visitors, and disabled people employed by the Trust. Parking is free for the duration of the visit or shift.
  • Frequent outpatient attenders Free parking is available for outpatients who attend hospital at least three times in a 30-day period, over a minimum of three months.
  • Parents of sick children staying overnight This applies to parents or guardians of children and young people under 18 who are admitted to hospital overnight.
If you fall into one of these groups please speak to your clinician, outpatient or ward staff. They will help you to complete a parking concession form and arrange access to our car park.

We understand this will be disappointing and frustrating for some people. These changes are necessary to manage limited space safely and fairly, in line with national NHS guidance and our current financial position.
