Whittington Health completes first procedures using Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system

Whittington Health has successfully completed its first procedures using the Hugo robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system, marking an exciting milestone in the Trust's ongoing commitment to delivering innovative, high-quality care for patients.

Following the arrival of the Hugo RAS system earlier this year and extensive training for our clinical teams, surgeons have now begun using the technology in operating theatres, with the first procedures completed successfully.

The Hugo system supports surgeons by providing a highly magnified 3D view of the surgical field together with precise, wristed instruments that can enhance dexterity and control during minimally invasive procedures. Robotic-assisted surgery does not replace the surgeon; instead, it enables them to perform complex operations with greater precision.

For many patients, robotic-assisted surgery has the potential to offer a range of benefits, including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times, depending on the procedure and individual circumstances.

The surgical teams expect to use the robot to provide bariatric, gynaecological, and some colorectal procedures, where robot assisted surgery is suitable and safe for the individual patient.

This milestone represents an important step in the development of robotic-assisted surgery at Whittington Health. The introduction of Hugo is part of the Trust's wider commitment to investing in modern technology that supports excellent patient care and helps improve clinical outcomes, helping local people to live longer, healthier lives.

Our multidisciplinary teams have worked closely over recent months to prepare for the introduction of the system, including specialist training, simulation exercises and careful planning to ensure the technology could be introduced safely and effectively.

As the robotic-assisted surgery programme develops, the Trust expects to expand the range of suitable procedures performed using the Hugo system, giving more patients access to the benefits of this advanced technology.
