Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Main Address

The Team provide and deliver Pulmonary Rehabilitation in various locations across the boroughs of Islington and Haringey.

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a programme of activity and education for people with long-term lung conditions. It combines physical activity sessions with discussions and advice on lung health and is designed to help you to manage the symptoms of your condition, including getting out of breath.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a programme of gentle activity based exercise and education about your illness which is targeted to your own specific needs. Whittington Health run the Breathe better, do more rehabilitation programme.

What is the Breathe better, do more programme?

  • This is a free group exercise and advice programme to help people with long-term lung problems, like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma.
  • The programme lasts for six weeks; each session lasts around an hour and a half.
  • A full assessment is completed by the specialist physiotherapist with you before you start so that the programme can be personalised to your situation and needs.
  • Specialist Physiotherapists run the programme, with help from specialist nurses and psychologists.

How will the programme help?

  • We will work with you to help you feel more confident in managing your breathlessness.
  • Get back to everyday things you enjoy.
  • Better understand your lung condition and feel in control.
  • Build strength and stamina at your own pace.
  • Use your inhalers the right way.
  • You will learn to notice the warning signs of a flare-up, so you can get help quickly.
  • We will share practical tips for managing your energy levels while you are recovering.

How does the programme work?

A health care professional from the team will telephone you to carry out an assessment to find out more information about your condition and how it affects your activities and daily life, including your medical history and medication.  During the call, any questions you may have about the course can be answered, and your suitability for the course confirmed.

If you are suitable for pulmonary rehabilitation following this assessment, you will be invited to a face-to-face assessment where your blood pressure, oxygen saturations, heart rate, respiratory rate, and your inhaler technique will be checked. You will then undertake a walk test and a strength test so that we can assess your current ability and baseline to plan your exercises within the course. You will then be invited to attend the course.
