Preceptorship

Nurse recruitment - How we support and invest in you - Preceptorship - Introduction
Nurses who are newly qualified, returning to practice or internationally educated who have successfully joined the NMC register are eligible for our 12-month Preceptorship programme, which has been granted the Capital Nurse Preceptorship Quality Mark Award.

The programme helps you strengthen your clinical skills and grow in confidence. Your Preceptor oversees your development and gives you personalised support in clinical and practical areas and the Trust supports further with study days and clinical skills and simulation training.

We accept referrals up to six months after you start your role and your experiences and learning to date can all be used as evidence to reach the learning outcomes of the programme.

Preceptorship is about helping you settle in as a new registrant and build confidence as you work towards your goals and aspirations. It has been proven to lessen the anxieties of transitioning into your post. You will have a supernumerary period to find your feet before you are included in the numbers as an autonomous practitioner.

You will be allocated a preceptor who will meet with you six times to review your progress and provide insight and feedback about your practice.

Preceptorship is also about consolidating your previous learning and experience and applying it to your practice. Our programme is accredited by Middlesex University and it can help you work towards your academic goals by achieving credits towards a Master’s degree.

Throughout, you will build a portfolio of evidence of your professional competency and growth using written feedback, self-assessment or reflections on your practice. Your clinical supervisors, senior staff, Practice Development Nurses or Midwives and your preceptorship team will help you.

The clinical skills training, specialist study and development reviews will be completed while on duty.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our Lead.
