Early pregnancy

Experiencing problems during pregnancy can be stressful and we aim to reassure you and make sure you are safe.
Our early pregnancy service cares for women and birthing people up to 17 weeks and 6 days pregnancy with problems including:

  • Pain and/or bleeding
  • Miscarriage or concern of miscarriage
  • Ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that is not located in the uterus, which can cause pain and bleeding)
  • Hyperemesis (severe vomiting)

We also can offer a reassurance scan for women having experienced miscarriage prior to current pregnancy.

Walk-in service

Women and birthing people with an emergency during early pregnancy should come to our walk-in service, from Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. You do not need a referral for the walk-in service.

Outside these hours, please go to the Emergency Department. Please note, currently the Whittington does not offer scanning services on the weekend, but some neighbouring hospitals do.

When you arrive at the walk-in, we have a dedicated triage system to ensure you are seen by the correct doctor or nurse. We aim to see you as quickly as possible, however during busy times you may need to wait for a few hours to be seen.

We will usually assess and scan you on the same day. However, sometimes you may need to return at another time for a scan.

Please note that our walk-in service is only for early pregnancy emergencies. If you have a gynaecology emergency, please go to the Emergency Department.
