Student Research

New Eligibility Criteria was published for student research by the Health Research Authority (HRA).  This applies to research which is primarily developed for the purpose of obtaining an education qualification.

Student research hosted in NHS trusts is often PhD level and above due to the timescales of setting up and delivering research in the UK.

Under the HRA criteria, some masters projects can apply for ethics review and Health Research Authority (HRA) and Health and Care Research Wales (HCRW) approval. Research at an undergraduate level cannot be delivered by the trust.

The HRA has developed a research toolkit to highlight the types of projects student can conduct from September 2021. It is required for students (master’s and PhD) and their supervisor to use and complete the toolkit before being able to submit a research application via the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS).
