Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity
Neurodivergence refers to natural differences in the way our brains work.
Some of the more common differences include ADHD, autism, or dyslexia. During pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood, you may have your own personal sensory or communication needs. It can for example help to have information explained clearly, step by step and in your preferred format. You may also prefer to have extra time to think about your choices.

Some people can feel overwhelmed and may struggle to express how they feel. We encourage you to speak with your midwife or doctor about this so that we can ensure we understand and meet your needs.

Sharing this with us during your pregnancy will help us understand how best to care for you, how to recognise signs that you are becoming overwhelmed and plan with you how best to support you if this happens. A calm, supportive environment can also make things easier.

You may also like to access the My Health Passport developed by the National Autistic Society or My Maternity Passport developed by the Maternity Autism Research Group. These are neurodiversity support plans designed to support autistic people to communicate their needs to midwives and doctors. We can support you to print and complete this.
