Full story

Each month, Whittington Health staff nominate their colleagues for Extra Mile awards, to recognise their contributions, often in the background. Congratulations to the November winners, who will each receive a certificate, an excellence pin badge and a £50 High Street voucher (£250 for teams) to recognise their hard work – here are their successful nominations:

Spiwe Jolomole – sister “Spiwe systematically volunteers to support the organisation every time we experience pressures and need leaders to show up. Her goal is to ensure we keep our patients safe and support our colleagues to deliver safe care in a suitable environment. Her "can do" approach makes her a great role model for junior colleagues. In her day job, she manages the enhanced care team in EIM but, over the last 2 winters, she has been the ward manager of an escalation ward (Thorogood and now Eddington). Because of her approachability and compassion, her staff don't hesitate to go the extra mile too.”

Ali Mehmet Uygungul – interpreter “Ali has worked for the trust for around 20 years, tirelessly going from department to department in the hospital, interpreting for our large Turkish speaking patient base. He helps up to 10 patients a day and his bleep never stops! He is making a real difference to their care, as well as supporting the work of our clinical staff. Over and above this, he works with the admin team to help other patients who do not speak English to access Trust services. He also supports us with our many Turkish translation requests. He worked all through the lockdowns, attending the hospital every working day, ensuring Covid measures were followed and responding to staff calls everywhere in the hospital. Now we are busier than ever, especially in outpatients depts. Without him, many of our patients would find it difficult, if not impossible. He is making a huge contribution to equitable patient access, ensuring their voices are heard and they can make informed choices about their health.”

Thank you, Spiwe and Ali, for your dedication, and thank you to all the nominees who did not win an award this month - we want to celebrate each and every one of your contributions, living out our values.
