Whittington Hospital has introduced the first pain clinic in the UK that offers Basi Vertebral Nerve (BVN) ablation procedure.
BVN ablation targets the basilar vertebral nerve, and is a minimally invasive solution for chronic back pain associated with degenerative disc disease.
Ablating the nerve helps to effectively disrupt pain signals, offering patients long-term relief.
Historically, the only procedure offered to those patients was spinal fusion surgery; however, this is not a routinely offered procedure nowadays because of associated risks.
Patients would usually be left with no other option other than relying on painkillers to manage their pain so the introduction of the BVN procedure will make a huge difference to the lives of patients like Naomi (pictured), who underwent the procedure earlier this month.
Dr Basil Almahdi, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, said “we are really excited about the positive impact BVN ablation will have on the lives of patient, providing them with a new option for managing their pain. We’ll continue to explore innovative treatments to improve the quality of life of people in our community.”
